2022 Leadership Journey Project: Developing a wellness program for tertiary level medical students in Kenya

June Mwende is a development and humanitarian worker with over 12 years work experience working across public, private and non- governmental agencies at national, regional and international arena. My goal is to work with communities towards improved livelihoods and better health outcomes.


June has served as an education officer and later moved into program development in a refugee setting, a stepping stone into program for multi-year, multi donor programming. She later on moved on into a food and security emergency operations program in Northern part of Kenya. June has provided project coordination in a conflict zone primary health care program in South Darfur. She was to later join a health systems strengthening program focusing on human resources for health at scale where she managed, coordinated and provided technical advisory to human resources for health management and development systems strengthening in Kenya and in the Eastern Africa region.


June has actively been involved in human resources for health policy making, strategy development processes, leadership development, capacity building, coaching and mentoring of public health service counter parts in health systems strengthening particularly in governance, leadership and human resources for health for HIV services, maternal, neonatal and child health services; family planning and reproductive health services; water, sanitation and hygiene; and nutrition services and institutional capacity strengthening at the Sub national level.

June has grown in her career in health systems strengthening having served from junior to mid-level and technical advisory roles. Organizations that June has worked for include: Care International Kenya, World Food Programme, Merlin UK, Intrahealth International, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Abt Associates, IMA World Health and Financing Alliance for Health.

June was recently awarded a fellowship position with the Financing Alliance for Health as a fellow in health care financing for community health services based in Kenya. Her role involves working in close collaboration with County governments to develop and cost community health implementation and strategy plans, resource mapping and mobilization, in addition to stakeholder coordination and management for community health.
