Idyoro Joseph Ojukwu

Dr Idyoro Ojukwu is a highly skillful obstetrician and gynaecologist who performs all obstetrics surgeries such as caesarian sections, laparotomy surgeries for general gynaecology and cancer of the women reproductive system. She is a good administrator with good managerial skills when it comes to daily management of the department as a team leader. 

Dr. Idyoro began her employment journey back in 2004 as a medical intern in Khartoum – Sudan. In 2005, she worked as a medical officer in her rural home of Torit in Eastern Equatoria state of South Sudan as part of giving back to her own community. In 2006 she worked as a director of the South Sudan HIV/AIDS commission in Torit where she established the first VCT center in the area. In 2008, she worked as a medical officer in Juba Teaching Hospital, from where she left for her residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Nairobi in 2009. Upon completion in 2013 she joined the Mater Hospital Nairobi as resident obstetrician to date.

Idyoro earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Juba; Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from University of Nairobi and she is the first female Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in South Sudan. She has completed her fellowship In Gynaecological Oncology from the University of Nairobi, and once again the first Gynaecological Oncologist in South Sudan.

Regarding women’s leadership, Dr. Idyoro firmly believes in the importance of policymakers’ involvement in improving women’s health. She is passionate about making a national and broader impact, and she recognizes that honing her leadership skills will enable her to influence policy-making at the highest level, ultimately advancing women’s leadership.

Fun Fact: As a small child, she used to be small bodied and short statured, so her classmates nicknamed her  ‘a small thing’. She is also a good story teller.
