Estel Ruth Opoku (Head of Midwifery, Ministry of Health, Ghana) is a global midwife and public health leader with over 16 years of experience advancing maternal, newborn, and reproductive health in Ghana. She currently leads national midwifery policy, workforce development, and quality of care initiatives at the Ministry of Health. Estel has spearheaded key programs, including the Midwifery Education and Practice Centres of Excellence and the National Preceptorship Policy, and contributes to national strategies through technical working groups and the Safe Motherhood Steering Committee. She plays a pivotal role in the Maternal Mortality Reduction Action Program (MMARP), a flagship Ministry of Health programme, driving policy, advocacy, and systems-level interventions to reduce preventable maternal deaths. She holds an MPH in Population and Reproductive Health from KNUST, a Diploma in Education and certifications in health leadership and monitoring and evaluation. She loves to dance and creatively translates complex health information into engaging visual content.
