2021 Leadership Journey Project: Empowering female caregivers of orphans & vulnerable children in Kano, Nigeria

Amina Muhtar is a Senior Program Officer in the Global Development Division’s Immunization team at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Amina drives engagement with global partners in immunization including UN agencies, World Bank and other institutions in the Gavi, Partners and Special Initiatives team.

Prior to joining the Gates Foundation, Amina worked at McKinsey & Company where she focused on supporting clients in organizational performance and transformation programs in the US. Amina moved to the US in 2019 from Nigeria where she led projects with governments, international development agencies, and philanthropic organizations in McKinsey’s Africa offices.

Prior to McKinsey, Amina supported the launch and implementation of a nationwide Maternal and Child Health initiative with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency SURE-P program in Nigeria. She established one of the first conditional cash transfer programs in the country incentivizing pregnant women to seek care in health facilities. Amina holds a degree in Finance from McGill University and a master’s degree in International Economics and Development from Johns Hopkins University. In her spare time, Amina enjoys traveling to explore new cultures and cuisines, playing tennis, and spending time with family and friends.
