Dr. Lorrein Muhwava

Dr Lorrein Muhwava is a public health specialist with over a decade of experience leading and managing clinical and implementation research in low-income settings. Her work is grounded in mixed-methods and implementation science research, with particular expertise in qualitative inquiry, research governance, regulatory compliance, and translating evidence into practice. She has worked across noncommunicable diseases, maternal and child health, women’s health, adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and HIV prevention. Within FIND’s Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) Programme, she leads implementation research and capacity-strengthening initiatives within South Africa’s public health sector.

Dr Muhwava holds a PhD (Medicine) and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Cape Town and has published peer-reviewed work on diabetes and health system interventions. She is a member of the Diabetes Alliance, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), and the Alliance for Girls and Women (AFWAG), and is the founder of the Davidzo Foundation, a non-profit organisation that empowers young women from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Outside of work, she enjoys reading biographies of women trailblazers whose lives and leadership continue to inspire her commitment to equity and social impact.
