2023 Leadership Journey Project: Gender Dimension in Indigenous Healing System: Challenges for building integrated and resilient health system

Dr. Nemthianngai Guite is an Associate Professor at the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. She is engaged in teaching and research supervision of the Masters in Public Health, MPhil and PhD programmes in the Centre. She has also taught in the Department of Social Work, Delhi University (DU) as an Assistant Professor prior to joining JNU. She holds a Master Degree in Social Work and MPhil/PhD Degree in Social Medicine and Community Health. She was awarded the Fulbright Nehru Post Doctoral Fellowship in Public Health by and Shastri Mobility Programme in Public Health by SICI. Her research focus is on Indigenous system of medicine including Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine specifically from a social science approach and perspective.

 

Dr Guite has authored the books Indigenous Medicine and Health Care: A Study among Paite Tribe in Manipur and Global Discourse and Local Realities towards Indigenous Medicine. She co-edited a book on Ethnomedicine and Tribal Healing Practices in India: Challenges and Possibilities of Recognition and Integration. She has widely presented papers in national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals on primary health care and indigenous medicine, indigenous healing systems; global discourses on biodiversity and indigenous medicinal knowledge, health care social work practice, maternal and child health and health issues concerning indigenous communities of India’s northeastern region.

 

She undertook and completed various research projects funded by organizations like Oxfam India, Save the Children, IGSSS (Indo Global Social Service Society) and ICSSR. Her research project on “Mapping and assessing the social networks of AYUSH practitioners in public health delivery system” funded by ICSSR is currently in progress. She has also been the Deputy Director, Research and Development Cell of JNU and currently a member in the Institutional Ethical Review Board of JNU. She is also part of several research committees as an external expert in Central and Private Universities across India.
